WHY MOST PEOPLE HAVE SLEEP APNEA

"At Last, Scientists Discover a Sleep Apnea Treatment That Is Easy, Free, and Proven to Work in Scientific Trials!"

From the Desk of:
Marc MacDonald, M.Sc.
Independent Sleep Apnea Researcher

Dear Fellow Sleep Apnea Sufferer,

Are you tired of expensive and uncomfortable treatments for sleep apnea? If you're reading this website, you're probably sick of struggling with your CPAP, tired of dealing with your dental appliance, or frightened by the idea of surgery.

And I don't blame you. In the years I've been researching sleep apnea treatments, I've received hundreds of emails from sleep apnea sufferers looking for easier, cheaper, and less invasive apnea treatments.

Unfortunately, most doctors aren't able (or willing) to share information with you on those treatments. The fact is, many doctors are too busy to keep up with new advances in sleep apnea treatments, so they simply don't know about alternatives to CPAP, dental appliances, and surgery. And other doctors WON'T tell you about new treatments, because they have no financial incentive to.

So I'm here today to tell that alternatives to the "mainstream" apnea treatments exist, and there's one in particular that is easy, costs nothing, can be done in the comfort of your own home, and is actually FUN. (Yes, fun!)

Sound too good to be true? How about if I told you that this treatment has been tested in scientific trials and has been written about in the prestigious scientific journal Complementary Therapies in Medicine? And it has also been tested and recommended by regular sleep apnea sufferers on websites around the Internet. (More about that in a second.)

What's the treatment? Singing exercises!

Curious? Read on to learn more!

MY STORY: FROM CPAP to WEIGHT LOSS to...SINGING EXERCISES?

Since starting Apnea Treatment Guide in 2008, I've spent hundreds of hours researching apnea treatments that DON'T involve CPAP. That's led me to discover many fascinating treatments that are proven for sleep apnea.

But by far the most interesting treatment is singing exercises.

What exactly are singing exercises?

I'll give you a detailed description in a moment. But first, allow me to explain why most people have sleep apnea in the first place.

WHY MOST PEOPLE HAVE SLEEP APNEA (AND SNORE)

The vast majority of people with sleep apnea suffer from what's called "obstructive sleep apnea", or OSA (a small percentage of people have "central sleep apnea". Central sleep apnea is very different from OSA, and is caused by neurological factors. I'll be talking only about obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA, here).

When obstructive sleep apnea occurs, the tissues in your upper throat relax and collapse together while you're sleeping. This blocks the air's passage temporarily.

Here's how it happens while you're asleep:

  1. Air travels to your lungs via the nose, mouth and throat (all known as the 'upper airway')
  2. Normally, the back of a person's throat is soft and naturally falls inward when they breathe.
  3. To prevent this soft tissue in the throat from closing (and cutting off your supply of oxygen), the muscles in the throat remain stiff during the day. Unfortunately, at night the muscles relax, causing the tissue in your throat to collapse.
  4. When the tissues at the rear of the throat collapse and become temporarily blocked off, apnea will happen and your breathing stops temporarily ("apnea" is a Greek word that means "cessation of breath").

There's also a connection with snoring here. Flabby tissues in the mouth and throat not only collapse when you fall asleep. They also VIBRATE - which is what causes snoring.

So the key to conquering obstructive sleep apnea (and snoring) is to have STRONG muscles to keep your throat open while you sleep.

Let's move on to HOW you can strengthen those muscles.

HOW CAN SINGING EXERCISES CURE MY SLEEP APNEA AND SNORING?

As I said, the main reason people do singing exercises for obstructive sleep apnea is to build and strengthen the muscles located around their airway.

By doing these exercises, the airway is a lot less likely to completely collapse and become blocked off during sleep.

So how can singing help? Simply put, in singing it is vital to have good muscle control over the soft palate and upper throat. These are the "pharyngeal" muscles which, when lacking in tone, can cause sleep apnea (and snoring). Singers use singing exercises to develop 'pharyngeal fitness'.

Here's a breakdown of the physiology:

Singing exercises work the soft palate. They do so by moving the soft palate up and down:

Singing exercises work the palatopharyngeal arch. That's the arch at the back of your throat that your little uvula (the dangly thing) hangs from:

Singing exercises work the tongue and up into the nasopharynx as well:

What Exactly is a Singing Exercise for Sleep Apnea?

Here's an example of a sound used to tone the soft palate:

This exercise uses the vowel sounds "yah" and "ah ah." Feel your soft palate rise with the sound as you do when you yawn. And let your mouth open wide and the back of your tongue move down and forward.

Pull the back of your throat wide open. Breathe in now, and ready? Sing this sound, ascending twice:

"Yah-ah-ah-ah ah. ah. yah-ah-ah-ah ah. ah."

Then descend: "yah-ah-ah-ah ah. ah. yah-ah-ah-ah-ah."

If you would like to hear this exercise in action, please click the arrow below:

Keep in mind that the key to effective singing therapy is to use a variety of specific sounds and tunes to work the palatopharyngeal arch, the tongue and the nasopharynx.

Proof That Singing Exercises Cure Sleep Apnea

I know what you're probably thinking at this point: "singing exercises seem so simple. How do I know they actually work in curing sleep apnea?"

It's a little-known fact that in 2000 a scientific study was carried out at the University of Exeter, in Exeter, United Kingdom. The results of that study were published in the journal Complementary Therapies in Medicine. Here's the information you need to know on that study:

Study Objective: To determine whether singing exercises could be used as a non-invasive treatment to increase muscle tone in the tissues of the throat and thereby reduce snoring.

Method Used: The duration of snoring of 20 chronic snorers was recorded by voice-activated tape recorder for 7 nights both before and after treatment. The therapeutic intervention consisted of instruction in singing technique and singing exercises which subjects were directed to practice for 20 minutes a day for 3 months. Compliance was encouraged by a further visit and regular telephone follow-ups.

Results: Snoring was on average reduced, especially in subjects who performed the exercises accurately and consistently and who were not overweight.

To read more about this study, please click this link: Can Singing Exercises Reduce Snoring? A Pilot Study

In years since that study, singing exercises have also caught the attention of other researchers, who now recognize the tremendous benefits of singing therapy:

A study by researchers at St. George's Hospital at the University of London compared the snoring and daytime fatigue of singers versus non-singers.

The study concluded that "singers have a significantly lower snoring scale score than non-singers".

National Public Radio produced an interview with a music teacher who has used singing exercises to help people stop snoring and cure their apnea.

Singing exercises are also recommended by Dr. Murray Grossan of the Grossan Institute. Dr. Grossan states that "For the average patient" singing exercises combined with clearing the nose and sinuses "can be a better alternative to surgery".

DO I NEED TO KNOW HOW TO SING TO DO THESE EXERCISES?

Not at all - if you can speak then you can sing! If you haven't sung since your school days you'll find it's just a matter of practice. In fact, over time, the exercises should improve your vocal strength, tone and agility.

As for singing in tune, this is not critical to the exercise of your pharyngeal muscles - but may improve your mood! Matching pitch is a skill like any other, and can be learned at any age if you missed out on early training. The most important things are listening and practice.

THROW AWAY YOUR CPAP IN 20 MINUTES PER DAY!

So I'll bet your next question is: "How long do I have to spend doing singing exercises?"

Here's the great news: results have been seen with as little as 20 minutes of singing each day. In fact, the participants in the University of Exeter study (mentioned above) spent just an average of 20 minutes per day doing their singing exercises.

The bottom line? Expect to spend approximately 20 minutes per day doing the exercises - at first. Once you see improvement in your sleep apnea, you can choose to reduce the amount of time spent singing (unless you're having fun - then do it as much as you'd like!)

WHAT RESULTS HAVE OTHER PEOPLE HAD?

Here's what other people have to say about this fun and easy new sleep apnea treatment:

"Mine started when I realized I had added a couple of pounds to my weight. I was such a snoring nuisance that I was told by my girlfriend that sometimes I would skip breath several times a night. I went to my doctor who diagnosed me with obstructive sleep apnea. Surgery was the option but then I heard about singing therapy. I bought the CDs and started performing the exercises. I can tell you my situation is way better and with the snoring gone I am convinced am cured of sleep apnea."

Tyson, comment published on Talk About Sleep online forum

"Conventional wisdom says that there is no cure for sleep apnea. I can say that there is an alternative, painless, no risk, inexpensive, convenient, potential cure without the use of CPAP.

For me this alternative cure worked, and perhaps will work for many others. I know it has worked for many with whom I have been in contact. This cure is a program to tone and strengthen the throat, tongue, and mouth musculature. In doing so, the soft palate may be prevented from flopping back and blocking the airway.

I have cured my sleep apnea. This has been confirmed by a nocturnal oxymeter, two polysomnography tests, and most important, observations by my wife. I no longer stop breathing while asleep, and my blood oxygen saturation stays at a high level.

My mental acuity and energy level had degraded substantially before the singing exercises. Both have been restored. I now feel like a "million dollar bill", and have a lot of pep.  We took a 6000 mile motor trip back in Summer 2006 unencumbered by the CPAP equipment.  We were able to visit England that fall - the same way - just the CDs. All that CPAP stuff was on my closet shelf and later given to our local hospital. I started singing exercises in 2005 and have now been without sleep apnea for over 5 years.

Charley Hupp, post made on on his blog

"My doctor told me I was suffering from a sleep disorder known as obstructive sleep apnea. He told me the cause was obesity and getting rid of excessive weight would reduce the snoring and the breathing difficulties I experienced. I tried this but then I stumbled on this so-called singing therapy and it sounded and easier option so I bought the CDs. I followed exactly what was written and performed the exercises as required. After three months the snoring and the breathing difficulties at night stopped. I can vouch for singing therapy; it is effective."

BUT HOW DO I KNOW IF I'M DOING THE RIGHT SINGING EXERCISES?

As I mentioned earlier, you can't just start singing "I'm a little teapot" in the shower and expect your sleep apnea to disappear ;) Strengthening your upper airway requires targeted practice, guided by an expert.

By not learning which songs to sing and how to sing them properly, you risk wasting months of effort.

So how can you learn which songs to sing and how to sing them, for maximum impact and quicker results?
