So How Did I Do It?

I used to have a regular day job, you know. I went to class all day, went to work at night and worked all night long for $7 an hour.

As you can guess, I hated it.

We both know that poker is much more fun than working for the man. I used to play in my spare time and although I used to lose money, I didn't mind. Poker served as a fun distraction from the stress of work so I carried on.

So I started taking my game seriously. I read every book I could get my hands on, scoured the internet for months and talked to any online pro that would give me the time of day.

During this learning phase, I made countless adjustments to my game and, before long, I had a decent bankroll going. It was only small mind you, but I had one nonetheless.

Not long after that, I moved up to the bigger tables and was buying in for $100 and $200 at a time and maintaining a solid win rate. It certainly beat my $7hour dead end fast food job!

It wasn't easy. It was an expensive tutelage but it all worked out in the end. I experienced huge swings and sick losses as I found my feet. I developed and tested countless strategies through painful trial and error.

There's nothing worse than laying down a big bet thinking you're winning by a mile, only to be called and lose it all. Sometimes what I thought my opponents had, and what they actually had, were so different it was unbelievable. I was getting it totally wrong.

And that's why it was an expensive tutelage. I had to pay my dues at the table while cracking the secrets of the game. In the months where I only earned 9 or 10 thousand dollars, I was still refining my tactics. (Notice how my view of money has changed? I used to think anyone who used the word "only" in the same sentence as $10,000 was a spoiled brat.)

But I was getting closer. I was learning more underhand tricks, getting it right more often, and winning far more sessions than losing. Soon I was consistently making a healthy profit and I knew it was just a matter of time before it all came together like the final pieces of a puzzle snapping into place.

I moved up in stakes slowly. In the very beginning was playing $25 buyin no limit but I worked my way up to 50NL, 100NL, 200NL and 400NL. Occasionally I would take shots at the bigger games and buyin at the $1,000 tables.

Imagine That I Offered You a Bet

I'll give you $20 every time you toss a coin and it lands on heads. But it costs you $10 for each throw. So if you flipped the coin 100 times it would cost you $1,000.

Because the odds of a coin landing on heads or tails are 50/50, you'd win roughly half the time for 50 winning throws and earning $20 each for a total win of $1,000.

So if it cost you $1,000 and you made $1,000 in winnings, you'd have a total profit of...

That's right: $0.00. Zero. Zilch.

And this is exactly how it would go in real life since tossing a coin is 100% luck.

Poker, on the other hand, is an entirely different story. There is some luck but you can control it with your skill. In poker, you might be able to bend those 50/50 odds to become 75/25... and if you could, the outcome would look like this:

100 throws at $10 per throw = $1,000 in costs.

75 wins at $20 per win = $1,500 in winnings.

Total profit: $500.

Now obviously you can't bend the odds of tossing a coin but you can manipulate the odds you give your opponents at the poker table through what cards you choose to play, where you sit at the table, how much you bet and even who you play against.

This sort of scenario might sound silly but it's not! It's exactly this kind of thinking that led me to developing the secret tactics that I used on a daily basis to slaughter online poker players, and basically force them to hand over their cash at "card-point."
