KALEIDOSCOPES IN BRIEF
'Kaleidoscopes' is a new innovative program that allows young people, their families, carers, teachers and counsellors to explore together our diverse and complex needs in a contemporary context. In its simplicity, its playfulness and in the creative way it is presented, it is a way of developing and maintaining hope in all of us, as it opens our awareness to our human spirit, our human-nature connection and our connection to the sustainability of the earth.
It offers the opportunity for all ages to create and communicate with each other through the senses, to express feelings and our intuitive awareness. It creates the space to share and acknowledge this wisdom, to see and feel the strength within us and the strength of the natural world around us. It is a tool to access our deep inner knowing, rather than seek outside ourselves for fulfillment. To offer this at a young age may prevent the destructive path of addiction, whether this is to a substance or an emotion.
The program comes from the indigenous perspective in a cross-cultural, universal way. It taps into the wisdom of the land and its people in a manner that is uniting and healing to all people, helping children of all cultures remember their innate wisdom.

Who is it for?
Kaleidoscopes is primarily aimed at primary school children. It is also suitable for adolescents, as in each session’s apparent simplicity there is a depth appropriate to all levels. We have even had great feedback from parents and carers working with even younger children.
Teachers, parents, carers, psychologists, creative arts therapists, occupational therapists and counsellors working with young people will find Kaleidoscopes a useful tool to use on an individual or group basis.
It has been designed so anyone can easily use it . Parentscan make the lessons a fun activity for play time and bring in the techniques to create the space to communicate and listen to each others wisdom. The techniques are very good for addressing challenging behaviour that always stems from children not understanding how to communicate how they feel.
Teachers and child care professionals will love the ease of which this fits into the curriculum. It is designed to take up one hour time slots with session outcomes and lesson plans. We even have creative individuals that run 15 week programs entirely based on the Kit, out of school or session time for an hour each week. This brings these essential techniques to the broader community with really heart warming results. I am very happy to advise anyone wanting more information on setting this up once you have the kit.
Comments from teachers who have undertaken the program
“The materials/resources are useful tools for students to express their innermost thoughts and feelings in a safe, supportive environments, whilst also being given the opportunity to freely express themselves through purposeful art activities. These activities engage all students.”
“Students have responded positively to the sessions, participating with enjoyment and enthusiasm. Difficult and challenging students have been particularly responsive, engaging in group discussions, listening attentively and giving focus to all tasks.”
“It was encouraging to see how some children appeared to be soothed, more peaceful during the weekly ‘hands-on’ activities”
“It was great to hear how the children’s conversation about their feelings and thoughts became more confident and detailed” as the sessions proceeded”
“A very positive and rewarding experience that saw children getting in touch with themselves and/or friends”

An extension of the program, ‘Beyond Purple – A Journey in Colour’, has been developed to serve those working with adults including psychologists, creative arts therapists, occupational therapists and counselors. Its use is enhanced by our imaginations, philosophies and areas of expertise. Please visit our optional extras page to view these.
How is it Implemented?
The program is ideally undertaken over a fifteen week period of one lesson per week with the clear step-by-step instructions provided. It is divided into 3 Modules with extension activities and overlaps with other classroom activities or components of the curriculum.
It can be used by classes or groups of children, individuals or parent-child activities. It can be particularly beneficial in the latter to foster greater understanding, improved relationships, and reciprocal awareness, trust, insight, respect and communication between parents and children.
It is designed to be used as many times as you feel is necessary, as it is a ‘tool’ which remains appropriate to the developmental stages of the children. Varied and quite different results, discussions and insights will occur each time it is used. Some teachers/parents may find it beneficial to use a guided relaxation session and/or listening to relaxing music prior to each session. A designated ‘Kaleidoscope Corner’ is encouraged for use by the children during free time, and to serve as a reminder of skills learnt.
The program predominantly revolves around 45 Kaleidoscope Cards consisting of 33 ‘window’ and 12 ‘doorway’ cards which are the main tools in this program.

Structure of the Kaleidoscopes kit
The kit includes:
-
Kaleidoscopes manual
-
Worksheet masters
-
Kaleidoscope ‘window’ cards with their associated meanings
-
Kaleidoscope ‘doorway’ cards and their associated meanings
-
Photographic images – microscopic
The manual consists of the introduction to the program, a brief description of the sessions that form the core of the program, and a step-by-step guide through each of the nine sessions. Materials required for each session are listed in the coloured boxes on the left of each session outline. However, an overview of those items is listed below so that you may gauge your capacity to provide some, or all, of the suggested resources, or think about collecting some items in advance of implementing the program.
Kaleidoscopes - 'The Human Spirit'
This Module, Kaleidoscopes, consists of six sessions. It demonstrates to the children their unique individuality and creativity. It encourages children to learn to trust, discuss their feelings and current challenges, and to awaken an awareness that in order to do this we need to give and receive caring and consideration to and from others. It introduces the concepts of imagination, inspiration, thought, feeling, excitement and freedom, by encouraging creativity through the ‘colours’ evoked by music. The language of colour and shape are explored, and the meanings of the Kaleidoscope cards are presented. The children are provided with an opportunity to create their own cards and meanings using three-colour combinations. A Kaleidoscope journal is created, to give voice to, and opportunity, for ongoing exploration of the child’s personal development.
Connections - 'The Human-Nature Connection'
Module 2, Connections, is comprised of six sessions which remind us that nature can give us strength. It encourages the children to utilise their imaginations in relation to colour, pattern and design in the natural world, to take a closer look at the environment, and relate these images to ourselves using both auditory and visual stimuli. The children create an ‘orb pouch’ and begin their own ‘feel good’, memory prompt collection. They explore the relationship and commonalities we humans have with other animals, plants and the environment, and the connection we have with all living things.
Over the Rainbow - 'Sustain-ability'
In Module 3, Over the Rainbow, three sessions explore the concept that the ‘pot of gold’ resides deep within each of us. We look closely at fruit/vegetables we consume using our creativity, and hence make a connection between our inner self, what makes us feel good and what we ingest. It serves as a reminder that we are all connected to nature and living things on a deeper level, and offers proof that what is inside us, is also inside all living things. Our growth, like a seed, must be nurtured to achieve our full potential.
