When I set out to run my first marathon, I had no idea what I was doing. I considered myself a runner, but not a long distance runner. Local 5k runs were my favorite. But then one day I just woke up and thought:

My knowledge of training for long distances was minimal at best. Up until now, my routine consisted of running three times a week with each run between 3 and 5 miles. The speed was always the same. Slow for a couple minutes and then fast until I ran out of energy. I knew this wasn’t going to get me to 26.2 miles, so I decided the best method would be run longer one time a week at a slower pace.

The first couple weeks went well and I was up to a 10 mile long run. I remember what my friends said when I told them I'd run over two hours for the first time.

“That’s as long as a movie, how do you run that far?"

But soon I realized something was wrong with my training....I couldn’t go farther than two hours. My body would shut down and I would have to walk back home, feeling crappy for the rest of the day. And unfortunately, it never got better during my long runs leading up to the marathon.

Race day came and went with disappointing results. I started off the race feeling great and really enjoying the experience. But at mile 23, I crashed and my body completely gave up on me...I was done for.

My positive attitude went into a tailspin to the lowest of lows. Not only did I instantly forget how awesome an experience the marathon was, I just wanted to quit. I probably would have quit, in fact, but I had a ride waiting at the finish line. I was forced to walk the last 3 miles of the course cursing my poor preparation and wondering why my body shut down.

I Was A Failure! But I Wasn't Ready To Give Up Yet

The next couple days were hard. I had to reveal to friends and family that I was not able to complete the marathon and had to walk the last 3 miles, not to mention the sore legs! I gave myself a week before deciding that I needed to give the marathon another shot. I knew I could run the distance, I just needed more help with how to run. This is when I discovered things like…
