Learn Brazilian Portuguese fast by focusing on how the language is spoken in Real life.

Hello! My name is Sam Watten - Welcome to my Real Brazilian Portuguese Website.

If your aim is to be quickly and effectively communicating in Brazilian Portuguese in real life situations, then you have come to the right place.

Whether you are just traveling in Brazil for a week or two, or if you eventually want to be using your Portuguese fluently in high powered business meetings, this website is the place to start your Brazilian Portuguese adventure.

Let me explain why..

Why Does This Course Work?

The unique aspect of Real Brazilian Portuguese is that it only teaches you the things that you actually need to know in order to start communicating in Brazilian Portuguese. It is not designed to get you talking fluently (no course can do this) but it will get you to the point where you can communicate almost anything you need to in Brazilian Portuguese and then go on and develop your skills naturally.

How does it do this? It teaches you the most commonly used words in Brazilian Portuguese and a scientifically proven way to make sure that you remember them. Most importantly, it also teaches you how to combine these words to make over 75,000 different conversational sentences.

Take a look at these sentences:

- I have to go back to the classroom now to speak to Mr Wright, do you want to wait for me here or in the car?

- I have to go back to the office now to speak to my boss, do you want to wait for me here or in the restaurant?

- I have to go back to the hotel now to speak to the manager, do you want to wait for me here or in the bar?

Notice how most words (in light blue) are the same?

- You need to help me to find the children I am going to look for them in the classroom can you try at home?

- You need to help me to find the foreign visitors I am going to look for them in the boardroom can you try the other office?

- You need to help me to find the new footballs I am going to look for them in the gym cupboards can you try the playground?

No matter what we do for a living or what we do in our spare time most of the words we use are the same. A school teacher, a business person, an athlete etc. all have specific vocabulary related to their daily lives - but the actual words that glue them together are the same!

<<<<<< By the way - you can grab the first 3 lessons for free to the left.

We are guaranteed to need certain words in Brazilian Portuguese so think about it - if the first words you learn are guaranteed to be ones you actually use then it simply HAS to be the best way to start communicating!

The Real Brazilian Portuguese course gets you communicating with real language from day one. The focus is less on grammar and specific vocabulary and more on achieving every day conversational skills as soon as possible. The idea being that once you are communicating your continued development is rapid and tailored to your particular lifestyle.

The Problem With Other Courses

There are hundreds of websites out there with excellent information on Brazilian Portuguese with grammar tables, podcasts, lists of vocabulary by category and so on. This is fantastic but there is so much information in these websites that it is difficult to know where to start. Lets face it, most of us do not have time to go through an entire website or dictionary for example and learn EVERYTHING. It would be great if we could do that but we can't!

The brain finds it very hard to remember huge bulks of information at once, especially if most of it we will never actually use. Most of us don't have a lot of time to spare so how do we know that we are not wasting our time?

There are 2 things we need to be sure of with a language course:

1. Are we learning useful things?
2. Are we going to remember these things?

What none of the other websites or courses do is provide you with a simple course that is rich with essential content and gets you to a postion where you can develop your skills naturally. These websites and courses also seem to neglect to offer any advice on taking on the new language and retaining it in our minds.

Real Brazilian Portuguese teaches you only the highly used words, ways to combine them for communication and also a technique to force yourself to remember everything. It automatically implants all of the most used words in Brazilian Portuguese into your mind, you will eventually pick up the less common words as you go as and when you specifically need them.

This is why you are currently in the right place for starting out with your Brazilian Portuguese. I promise that this system works - I've used it on many students and every one of them was able to go on and continue to develop his or her skills further afterwards.

How did I come to realize the problem with other courses?

Like everybody else, when I started to learn Brazilian Portuguese my aim was to be communicating in as short a time as possible. Unfortunately for me, like most people learning a new language, I started by using grammar-focused course books and vocabulary-heavy phrase books.

One Brazilian Portuguese course book I tried out claimed it was perfect for you if:

"Your object is simple everyday conversation"

Great, that was my aim exactly!

Have a look at some of the chapter headings from this "simple everyday conversation" course book:

I've heard that some people actually like grammar. Personally I've never met one of these people but if they exist I'm sure they would understand what the above means.

When I was starting out trying to learn Portuguese, not only did I not understand these terms but I didn't want to understand them. Reading chapter headings like this just made me want to throw the book out of my 7th floor window, go and find the nearest American bar and give up even trying to learn Brazilian Portuguese.

But NO! I was determined not to give up! The next course book I tried was less grammar-focused. It promised I would be:

"Speaking Brazilian Portuguese from the start with our simple building block approach"

Great I thought, this will actually get me speaking rather than just throwing obscure grammar at me.

Below are two of the phrases included in Lesson 1:

OK, so admittedly I learnt to speak Brazilian Portuguese right from lesson one but I have never yet in my life ever had to say either of these two things in Portuguese.

In fact I will go as far as to say that I don't think I have ever said these 2 phrases in ENGLISH in real life conversation!

What is the point in learning this stuff if I'm never going to use it?!

This is not real Brazilian Portuguese as it is spoken by real Portuguese speakers. This is classroom / phrase book Portuguese which in my experience is of no use in the real world.

The Breakthrough!

As I have already explained the solution is to use real high-use Portuguese but how did I come to realize this solution?

To cut a long story short, I realized the solution when I went to stay in my girlfriend's small city outside of Rio de Janeiro for a week while she was away with work. Nobody there spoke English so I was forced to use what little Portuguese I had picked up from phrase books etc.

It turned out that what I actually needed was very little. I did not recall grammar clauses and perfectly structured sentences and specific vocabulary because I did not have time to remember them (or more likely Icouldn't remember them). What I actually used was real Brazilian Portuguese because I had to actually communicate real things!

For example, I said things like:

- I want to go back to the house in order to find my phone.

- I need to drink some coffee please because I have to drink coffee every morning before I can wake up!

- Do you want me to help you with the bbq?

- Are we going to go to the city today or are we going to stay here?

- I don't want to drink more beer tonight, I need to rest!

All of the words in light blue are among those taught to you in Real Brazilian Portuguese, the other specific words you will pick up along the way depending on your needs - do you see how the system works? Learn the power, high-use words first and the specific words will build naturally!

In order to communicate in Brazilian Portuguese quickly we need to not waste any time learning stuff we are not going to use or learning important stuff but forgetting it straight away.

Remember my 2 points from before?

1. Are we learning useful things?
2. Are we going to remember these things?

This Real Brazilian Portuguese course is built around two elements that make sure we achieve these 2 objectives.

FIRST ELEMENT: LOGIC We must make sure that we are learning words and phrases that we understand and are actually going to use.

SECOND ELEMENT: SCIENCE We need to be sure that we are able to remember and retain the Real Brazilian Portuguese so that we can use it in real life situations.

Real Brazilian Portuguese: LOGIC

How do we make sure we are learning the right things?

Did you know that according to The Ladybird Publishing Company's Key Words scheme, just 12 words make up one quarter of all the English words we read and write? Therefore, you could argue that there are only 12 words in English you need to know and you are a quarter of the way to speaking English fluently.

This sounds far fetched but it's probably true. It's a similar story with any language - there are surprisingly few words that we actually use in everyday real-life situations. Logically If we take the words that are used most often in Brazilian Portuguese and learn these few words first, and only these words to start with, you will be communicating effectively in Brazilian Portuguese very quickly.

It seems so obvious that you should start by only learning the words you are going to use yet traditional teaching methods ignore this logic.

Real Brazilian Portuguese has only 133 essential words for you to learn. That's just 7 per lesson. All of these words you will use in everyday situations. What's more - with only these words, and some common sense, you will be able to say almost ANYTHING you want to in Brazilian Portuguese. They really are the most useful words that exist in Brazilian Portuguese.

My course will show you how these words work together in practically countless combinations to create almost anything you need to say in Portuguese. How? Simple mathematics.

The 28 Power Verbs form the base of everything you say. These Power Verbs can link with every single one of the 48 Hot Verbs creating different meanings. All of these new combinations can then link with every one of the 57 Power Vocabs to produce potentially over 75,000 unique phrases! (28 x 48 x 57 = 76,608) All this from 133 words!

Real Brazilian Portuguese's super-clear, tried and tested lesson structure introduces to you the Power Verbs, Hot Verbs and Power Vocab in such a way that you can instantly combine them to create real phrases. You'll soon see the real power of this system as your communication capabilities literally multiply with each lesson!

Real Brazilian Portuguese: SCIENCE

How do we make sure that we retain the information? With Mnemonics.

A mnemonic can be described as a system of linking new information to familiar information in our minds. It is perfect for learning new words in a new language. Far better than boring repeating methods.

Our brains evolved to learn new information in this way - linking new words to scenes in our mind. When we were babies we would get used to the smell and feel and texture of something and eventually it would instantly bring a word to our minds - teddy!

Our brains still work in this way - have you ever experienced a smell or heard a song that sends you back many years to a distant time in your past? Well mnemonics attempt to mimick this. We link the new words not to smells or songs but to experiences that we create in our minds. The effectiveness is astonishing!

Here is an example of a mnemonic that worked very well for me.

The Portuguese word for drink is beber which is pronounced bee - bair. Have a look at this mnemonic construction below.

I imagined a bee buzzing around its hive making honey. Along comes a thirsty bear who climbs up the tree and starts to drink the honey. The more you go into detail in your mind the better the mnemonic will work. With the above example, for me it helped to imagine a famous bear, Winnie the Pooh drinking the honey. You need to think hard about the bear being thirsty and needing a drink. It sounds crazy but it is science.

If you spent a few minutes repeating these two WORDS over and over again...

Beber - Drink

Beber - Drink

Beber - Drink

Beber - Drink

Beber - Drink

...You may remember the word for a few days (if you are lucky). If you spend 10 minutes using the above mnemonic system to its full potential you will remember this word for not days, not weeks, not months, not years but forever. Try it for 10 minutes and I'll bet you will NEVER forget the word for to drink in Portuguese.

My Real Brazilian Portuguese Course provides you with mnemonics for each of the 133 power words you are required to learn. The course gives you all the information you need to be able to develop these mnemonics so that they work for you personally and ensure that you are imprinting the language into your brain.

Mnemonics are scientifically proven to be simply the most powerful way to remember new language! Combine this Real Science with the Real Logic system and I can guarantee your success in communicating in Real Brazilian Portuguese.

WHY DID I MAKE LCFM? WHAT'S SO SPECIAL ABOUT LCFM?

6 years ago I came to Shanghai on a teaching assignment, planned to go straight back to Canada after I finished, but got sucked into the whole Chinese culture, decided to stay and learn Chinese. I tried to learn Chinese at reputable universities here in Shanghai (Donghua Da Xue, Hua Dong Shi Fan Da Xue), I tried tutors, and I bought a few online/DVD Chinese Learning programs. None of these methods worked for me. Studying seemed more like a chore - writing characters over and over again, memorizing vocabulary lists. Nothing was sticking - there had to be a better way. My university classmates, even after studying Chinese for 2 years could not even hold a conversation with a native Chinese speaker. The courses are so drawn out. I mean, really, 2,3,4 or more years to learn a language? I don't think so. They never mention that:

LEARNING LANGUAGES FROM MOVIES IS THE MOST POWERFUL AND FASTEST WAY TO LEARN A LANGUAGE.

Chinese language classes are just textbooks and teachers. What a great way to turn you OFF a language. Instead of getting bored in a classroom, why not get excited and watch a movie with...

UNIQUE, INTUITIVE SUBTITLES THAT WILL HELP YOU LEARN CHINESE RAPIDLY.

How do other parts of the world learn English? That's right, through Hollywood/American movies. I remember meeting this one Chinese guy named Rocky who had the best English I've ever heard. How did he learn his English? From Al Pacino movies! The guy swore a bit too much, but other than that it was flawless! So, doesn't it make sense that we can learn Chinese through Chinese movies? You bet it does!

WOULDN'T THOSE EXPENSIVE INTERACTIVE CHINESE LEARNING DVD PROGRAMS BE BETTER THAN MINE?
Short answer - NO! Most online/DVD/CD programs I bought were way overpriced and were lacking in so many ways, it was unbearable and utterly unbelievable. Knowing what I know now...
I WOULDN'T USE THESE "REPUTABLE" PROGRAMS EVEN IF THEY WERE FREE. WHY?
All these "reputable" online/DVD/CD programs have one or all of these pitfalls:
Foreigners (ie non-native Chinese speakers) speaking a Chinese dialogue with terrible tones (Learn Chinese from Movies - LCFM - has Chinese people with perfect tones!)

Did not teach a single Chinese character, only Pinyin. (You actually learn Chinese faster if you learn Chinese characters - SEE BELOW)

Didn't have a transcript of the dialogue. (LCFM has badass transcripts! see below)

Only taught a few hundred words or characters (LCFM has over 1700 Chinese characters, see below!)

Terrible animated dialogues, usually with 3$ computer microphone audio. (LCFM uses a badass movie instead! see below)

"Interactive" programs have this so-called "Voice Recognition Software" that says if your pronunciation is "right" or "wrong". This software, however, can not distinguish between similar pinyin sounds like z-, zh-, j. So, basically, it's useless...unless terrible pronunciation is your goal. (LCFM shows your how to pronounce everything perfectly!)

Did not have anything for learning "on-the-go" - ie, videos, flashcards for iPod/iPhone, PSP, etc. (LCFM does! See below!)

Did not teach Chinese from a Chinese movie (LCFM uses 10 badass movies!)

The Learn Chinese from Movies (LCFM) Program does NOT have any of the pitfalls of "reputable" DVD/CD/Online Products!

Instead...
the LCFM Program includes these features:

LCFM teaches Chinese Characters because learning only Pinyin will slow you down. So many "pinyin-only-learners" look back in regret, knowing they should have started with Characters from the get-go. Chinese characters look intimidating, but they're not all all, as I will show you in this program

LCFM has badass movie transcripts. To learn any language a transcript is a must, it jump starts your learning by pairing up visuals with audio - especially Chinese because of their very visual/pictographical writing system

LCFM teaches you enough characters to read most of a Chinese newpaper - over 3000 characters (10 movies total)! This is more than Rosetta Stone, Fluenz, and Pimsleur combined! This program will teach you the 3,000 most commonly used Chinese characters and more.

Also, reading body language, looking at gestures, and having decent audio - like from movies - is ideal when learning a language.

LCFM will show you how to speak each word perfectly.

LCFM program is the only one on the market that uses a full-length Chinese movie (now 10 movies!), with "magical" subtitles that will learn Chinese FOR you.

I don't mean to come across as this big "hater" - go ahead and try all these other "reputable" online/DVD/CD programs and see what you think. If you like them, that's great. But if you don't, maybe it's time to try something new.

Anyways, my point is that during my Chinese learning road to "fluency" I realized that there were many downfalls in every method for teaching Chinese.

I really like movies, and I really like learning Chinese. Why don't I just learn Chinese from movies? But, there's only one problem - I only knew a few Chinese characters (at that time) - the rest of the characters I simply couldn't read or pronounce. It'd be really cool if the movie had pinyin too. So I thought why don't I take a cool Chinese movie and add my own Chinese, Pinyin, and English subtitles. And that's what I did and it worked pretty well for me. But sometimes I forgot which Chinese character had which meaning and I didn't want to search in a dictionary every time I forgot a Chinese character. So I thought I'd go ahead and add a word-for-word (WFW) direct translation line.

The Word-for-Word Direct Translation Line
(see picture below) saves you HOURS of time. You do not need to use a dictionary to search for individual words!

(Note: the WFW Translation line is currently only available in ONE movie - Spring in a Small Town. Currently working on the other ones.)

Anyways, after I added these "magical" subtitles it looked like this:

I did this for a few movies and then just watched the movies over and over again until I knew almost every word and every line of the movie.

It absolutely SKYROCKETED my Chinese level.

I could pick up those super-hot Chinese girls with non-existent-English with my new silky-smooth Chinese. I got job offers through my new Chinese friends at companies in Shanghai. Travelling through China was now a breeze and so much more enjoyable. Getting Chinese prices - for food, housing (buying and renting), maids, clothes - comes with good Chinese skills. You can basically live like a Chinese person- ie, super cheaply! You can save money and be efficient at the same. In general, my quality of life improved and I became much happier. Even if you just go to China often for business, your Chinese skills makes everything more enjoyable.

So back to my story - my friend saw these videos I made on my computer with these "intuitive" subtitles one day and later convinces me to share these with some more people.

I put a few videos on youtube. Before I knew it, some videos had received:

over 180,000 views!!!!!!

I was blown away.

During the first year, a got a few hundred emails and lots of youtube comments as well as close to 200 Youtube users subscribed to my "channel" (If you're a youtube user, you'll know that this is quite a high number for a niche like this). People were leaving unbelievably nice comments and loved the whole "magic subtitles" concept (Chinese, Pinyin, WFW, English subtitles) and wanted more.

Here's an email from Dave who just got to Shanghai:

Hi there, just wanted to say thanks so much for putting together the subs for these movies. I've just moved to Shanghai and doing a lot of self-study, and I've found them incredibly helpful. They've really helped me a lot with my speaking and listening skills. I feel like I'm picking up the language a lot more because of what you've done. It's really empowering and really expands my world since English is very sparse here, and in many cases, nonexistent.

Much, much appreciated.

Cheers

Dave

Here's another from Youtube user crock703:

This is a great way to passively studying language.. the educational videos get so boring.

Here's another email I got from David (a different Dave!) who even wanted to help me make the product for free:

Learning Chinese through watching movies is a great idea, and I have tried doing it myself. But without pinyin subtitles (I don't have time for hanzi) I don't learn much from the movies. I got an English transcript of a few Chinese movies (original version) and translated it into Chinese (with my tutor). I then tried to watch the movie but even though my translation was good it was not very close to the actual dialogue in Chinese.

I am glad someone else has taken up the challenge, and am happy to support your efforts at least through purchasing the product. Tell me if there is any other way I can help out.

Dave

Here's an email from Kevin (who also bought the DVD) who also wanted a DVD to watch while on the couch with Pinyin subtitles. He also brings up a good point about watching Chinese movies in the theatre:

Hi Darren,
For myself, the product I would really like is DVDs with pinyin subtitles, like what you have on your site already, but a full DVD so I can sit on the couch get comfortable on watch the whole thing. Also pinyin transcripts of the movies would even be great with the characters and english would be great too. so you can read the transcipts before you watch the movies, then when we watch the movie you dont even need the pinyin subtitles on the screen and just focus on building up your skill to watch the movies like you would have, say in a theater.

Best,

Kevin McKenzie

Here is a screen shot of the Youtube Channel comments from some of my loyal subscribers:

I didn't really want to go through the trouble of creating this program, I wanted just continue teaching high school math and travelling in Asia on my holidays. But the emails just kept coming. So I had a choice to make - either change email addresses (which I really hate doing) or create this program (and make some money, ha). So I chose to create the program. I had never created this kind of program before. It was quite a challenge and took me about half a year to complete. All the while...

I kept getting emails from people asking me when the program will be completed, such as this one from a guy named Mark:

How's the program coming. I'm ready to be your first customer. No rush. i just wanted to make sure you didn't forget.

With such positive feedback, I believe this program was decent and believe it can really help all you Mandarin Chinese learners out there. Keep in mind, I'm not some sort of professional Chinese teacher. This program, however, is used by Dr. Schmidt, Ph.D to teach Chinese to his students in Africa. Dr. Schmidt has authored over 20 books and textbooks in the fields of Chinese Studies, Linguistics, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chinese and African Studies and Cultures, and Religious Studies and Theology.
