But the truth is that even the BEST teachers on the planet find themselves on the chopping block with EVERY DOWNWARD TICK of the economy. Perfect example? My friend Jason. I was out there trying to find a job and failing. Over and over again, EVERYONE was firing, and NO ONE was hiring. Jason, on the other hand, actually managed to get a job straight out of school! Jason only got to teach for ONE YEAR, and then he was LAID OFF...suddenly and without warning. To make a long story short...the poor guy is now brewing coffee at a COFFEE BAR...wearing an apron and pulling in $8.25 an hour. He's still getting up at 6 am, but now he's making foamy soy lattes and listening to people complain about the same economy that just TORPEDOED his career. As for me, my situation was getting DESPERATE. Even the guys who ALREADY HAD teaching jobs were getting the axe, so where did that leave me? Every rejected application and closed door I ran into soon made it crystal clear: I had to find a teaching job FAST, or I'd be up a certain creek without a paddle! I thought about going BACK to school for a Master's Degree in the hopes that maybe better credentials were the answer...but then I had to do a serious reality check. You'll be entering the workforce approximately $45,000 IN DEBT. Student loans can never be forgiven, not even if you declare bankruptcy. Wages, tax returns, including earned income tax credits, and even Social Security and disability benefits can be garnished to pay them. The unemployment rate for college graduates under the age of 25 is over 9%.
