***Tip 1. Most designer's ( men's, women's & accessory designers) do not contemplate mail order. Most focus on retailers and e-tailers yet the mail order business is enormous. The biggest and brightest mail order business is Shop Direct. Send them your company details at supplier.enquiries@shopdirect.com and get in front of them! Their orders alone dwarf all orders you will get from department stores, e-tailers and independent stores put together, however they have a very specific way of working and will require photographic samples and usually factory compliance details as do most of the large multiples.

I am often asked " where do we show the collection from?" or "Can i show from home?"

Showrooms are expensive, even short term showrooms on a 4 - 6 week let are expensive. If you plan to show your collection in central London, showrooms are very expensive and if you don't have fixed appointments there is nothing worse than sitting around in your paid for showroom waiting for buyers to show up! It would be much more cost effective to either take part in a well attended & recognised trade exhibition, where buyers visit en masse.

Great to fix appointments with buyers at their stores also. Buyers don't mind this initially as it's a zero risk/outlay for them. I tell you the terminology we use, as well as tricks we employ, to get us in front of them.

My advice, don't invest in a showroom unless you have guaranteed fixed appointments with buyers & if you do take a showroom, double book your appointments! Buyers cancel at the last minuet, forget, get delayed or take extended lunches! You would be better off having multiple buyers in the showroom at the sametime! I have done this numerous times and it actually has the effect of creating such a buzz around the collection, buyers feel as though they are missing out if they don't place an order! Ideal for us!

For short term showrooms in central London, contact Kelly Myers at The Langham Estate on 020 7580 5656 or email kelly.myers@langhamestate.com I have found Kelly to have reasonably priced showrooms in W1 but still expect them to be in the region of £2400.00 plus VAT per month (That's about £85 per day) This is for approx 500sq ft which can accommodate about 4/5 6ft garment rails, holds about 350 hanging garments/Accessories & bags. He handles UK showrooms for designers worldwide wanting a central London UK base whilst showing their collection in London.

When I started in this business as a know nothing 19 year with little knowledge & even less contacts, I was told, by industry experts, I would not survive in the fashion industry! What will you find me doing today in the fashion business?

Today I work with the multiples. The largest retailers in the world, such as Next, River Island, M&S, Urban Outfitters, Shop Direct, Zara and the like. These guy's buy specific merchandise from me that they cannot do themselves. The orders are large ( 5000 - 10,000pcs per style per col).

I enjoy this new element of working, It is largely done via cloud computing and Cad's ( Computer aided designs) which I find fun. Negotiation is still a very large part of my business, Oh and I still brand build with smaller emerging menswear, womenswear & accessory designers to help them launch their collections the correct way, so all in all I keep myself pretty busy.

I also still work in the Couture and Haute Couture environment. I represent one designer who sells to Saudi Royalty, Barneys, Net a Porter, Browns, Harrods, Harvey Nichols, etc so I am still highly active in the luxury arena also.
